NEW DELHI (AA) - India began counting votes Sunday in four states where provincial elections took place last month.
Polling in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan and Telangana took place in several phases between Nov. 7 and 30.
Counting will take place in 638 assembly constituencies in the four states, while northeastern Mizoram will count votes Monday, according to election authorities.
The elections have significance as they are held ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Exit polls this week suggested that the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and the main opposition party, Indian National Congress, are in a close race and both parties are likely to win two states out of five.
