ATHENS (AA) - Intense seismic activity has led to a significant decrease in bookings for the Greek island of Santorini, media reports said Thursday.

Specifically, holiday reservations for the island appear to be 23% lower in early March compared to the corresponding period in 2024, according to the Kathimerini newspaper, citing reports from domestic and foreign tourism organizations.

Similarly, booking for airline seats for trips to the island appears 9% lower compared to last year, it added.

Kathimerini said the state of affairs is because of natural phenomena, especially earthquakes, that have been taking place in the wider maritime area around the island in previous weeks.

It noted that a possible escalation of the seismic activity could certainly magnify losses in reservations.

The newspaper noted that last year more than 1.5 million passengers from abroad arrived at the Santorini airport, 1.8% more than in 2023.
