ISTANBUL (AA) - The Iranian consulate and the residence of an Iranian envoy in Damascus have been targeted in an airstrike by Israel as six people were killed, Syria's official news agency reported Monday.
SANA reported that a senior leader from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps in Syria and Lebanon, Mohammad Reza Zahedi, was killed in the air strike, although the claim was rejected by the Iranian media.
Iranian state-run media outlet Al-Alam claimed that Iran’s Ambassador to Syria Hossein Akbari and his family did not suffer any wounds from the attack.
Iran maintains a significant military presence in Syria.
The escalation in tensions came as the Israeli war in the Gaza Strip rages on, claiming 32,845 Palestinian lives so far.
