BAGHDAD (AA) - A Baghdad criminal court has sentenced four convicted Daesh terrorists to death, Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) said Tuesday.
“The Karkh Criminal Court handed down death sentences against four terrorists who confessed to belonging to Daesh,” SJC spokesman Abdul Sattar Bayrakdar said in a statement.
“The four had been making improvised explosive devices and planting them on roads in Baghdad’s Yusufiya district, leading to the death and injury of several security personnel,” he added.
According to Bayrakdar, the death sentences handed down against the four individuals -- which can still be challenged before Iraq’s main appellate court -- were based on provisions of Iraq’s 2005 anti-terrorism law.
Late last year, officials in Baghdad declared that Daesh's military presence in Iraq had been all but destroyed.
It appears, however, that the notorious terrorist group still maintains a limited presence in certain parts of the country.
