BAGHDAD (AA) – The Iraqi army launched a military operation on Saturday against the Daesh/ISIS terrorist group in the northern province of Salahuddin, according to a local military source.
The operation aims to hunt down Daesh/ISIS terrorists holed up in Dujail district, south of Salahuddin, the source said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media.
The Iraqi military has yet to confirm the anti-Daesh/ISIS offensive.
Earlier Saturday, two rocket attacks targeted Dujail district. No injuries were reported.
In 2017, Iraq declared victory over Daesh/ISIS by reclaiming all territories the terrorist group controlled since the summer of 2014, which was estimated to be about a third of the country’s territory.
The group, however, still maintains sleeper cells in large areas in Iraq and occasionally launches sporadic attacks.
