BAGHDAD, Iraq (AA) - Iraq’s population has reached nearly 45.5 million, preliminary results of the country’s first census since 1987 showed.
Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani said Monday that Iraq’s population has risen to 45,407,895 with 70.3% living in urban areas and 29.7% in rural areas.
"The number of households is 7,898,588, with an average household size of 5.3 individuals," he told a press conference in Baghdad.
The premier said that the number of males reached 22,784,062, making up 50.1% of the population, while the female population is 22,623,833, comprising 49.8%.
The census was conducted on Wednesday covering the entire country, including the Kurdish region in northern Iraq, the first such census in 37 years.
