BEIRUT (AA) – The Israeli army on Friday bombed homes and buildings in the strategically important town of Khiyam in southern Lebanon, according to local official media.

The Lebanese official National News Agency (NNA) reported that the Israeli army bombed Khiyam heavily as it advanced into the town.

People in nearby towns heard the thunder of at least two massive bombings, the NNA said.

The Israeli army continued its destructive assault on Khiyam with artillery shelling and aerial strikes, the news agency said, adding that Israeli fighter jets conducted two airstrikes on the town's Jlahiye neighborhood.

Israel has engaged in cross-border warfare with Lebanon, launching an air campaign in late September against what it claims are Hezbollah targets.

Over 3,600 people have been killed by Israeli attacks in Lebanon, with more than 15,300 injured and over 1 million displaced since last October, according to Lebanese health authorities.

Tel Aviv expanded the conflict by launching a ground assault into southern Lebanon on Oct. 1.
