Israeli prime minister tests positive for COVID-19

Bennet's office says he will continue work as usual from his residence

JERUSALEM (AA) – The Israeli government announced early Monday that Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has contracted coronavirus.

“Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has been infected with COVID-19. He is fine, and will continue his work as usual from his residence," a statement by the Israeli government read.

It added that Bennet will hold a meeting with the ministers of defense and internal security this morning to assess the situation in the wake of Sunday's attack that killed two people.

The Israeli police said that two people opened fire late on Sunday in a street in the city of Hadera, central Israel, killing two Israelis and wounding three policemen.

On Sunday, Bennett received US Secretary of State Antony Blinken who is taking part in a six-party summit hosted by Israel. The Egyptian, Emirati, Bahraini and Moroccan foreign ministers will also attend the summit.
