ISTANBUL (AA) - Italy's Angela Carini abandoned on Thursday an Olympic women's 66kg boxing match against an Algerian athlete, who failed a gender test last year.
"I got into the ring to fight. I didn't give up, but one punch hurt too much and so I said enough," Carini said after the game.
"I'm going out with my head held high," she added.
In the opening round of their women’s welterweight match, the Italian boxer was hit twice by Algeria's Imane Khelif and stopped her clash in the round of 16 match.
After returning to the center of the ring, she left the bout in tears, which led to Imane Khelif being declared the winner, advancing to the quarterfinals.
Khelif, 25, had been disqualified from the 2023 World Championships after failing a gender eligibility test.
