ROME (AA) - The Italian government said Wednesday it will reintroduce controls at the border with Slovenia amid growing tensions in the Middle East.
“The intensification of crisis spots at the borders of Europe, particularly after the attack suffered by Israel, has increased the level of threat of violent actions also inside the European Union,” according to a statement by the office of the prime minister.
Rome said the scenario is aggravated by the constant migration pressure to which the country is exposed.
In the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, at the border with Slovenia, authorities identified 16,000 people who entered the country irregularly, said the statement.
“This scenario confirms the need for further reinforcement measures of prevention and control,” it said.
Checks at the border will be reintroduced for 10 days from Oct. 21, and can be extended.
