ANKARA (AA) - The Olympic Games in Tokyo will take place without local spectators at venues over concerns of rising coronavirus cases, Kyodo News reported on Thursday.

The announcement, which was made by Olympics Minister Tamayo Marukawa, came shortly after the Japanese government declared a COVID-19 state of emergency in the capital Tokyo between July 12 and Aug. 22.

Japan had previously barred international spectators from attending the delayed Olympics, scheduled to be held from July 23 to Aug. 8.
