Japan maritime chief resigns amid scandals

Authorities have dismissed, suspended and punished dozens of defense officials over mishandling of sensitive information among other issues

ISTANBUL (AA) - Japan's maritime chief admiral Ryo Sakai resigned on Friday, after scandals were exposed in the country's defense ministry.

He was replaced by Akira Saito, current chief of staff of the Maritime Self-Defense Force.

The resignation was forced after 218 defense personnel from maritime branch were punished over issues including alleged mishandling of sensitive information.
