TOKYO (AA) - An extreme heatwave in Japan has killed at least 300 people in July, government officials have said, as the country records its highest ever temperature ever.

According to local media reports, citing disaster and emergency management authorities, the heatwave has killed at least 300 people and sent thousands to hospitals in just a month.

Temperatures over 40 degrees Celsius were registered across the country in the same period.

More than 200 of the deaths were caused by torrents of rainfall and flooding triggered by record-breaking heatwave while the rest of the casualties occurred due to heat-related health issues.

According to Kyodo news agency, over 57,000 people sought hospital treatment between April 30 and July 29.
