GAZA CITY, Palestine (AA) - The Israeli army conducted a fresh drone attack Wednesday evening targeting a charity facility in western Khan Younis, southern Gaza, killing at least six Palestinians, including a journalist, and injuring 10 more.
Journalist Ahmad Al-Shayah and former prisoner Ali Youssef Al-Maghrabi, who was serving as a spokesperson for the Prisoners' Media Office, were both killed in the attack, medical sources told Anadolu.
Witnesses reported that the Israeli drone struck the facility, located in an area previously classified as a “safe zone” by the Israeli military.
Four people were killed on the spot, including Al-Maghrabi.
Al-Maghrabi was released as part of the 2011 "Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange," in which Israel released 1,027 Palestinian detainees in exchange for the release of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who had been held captive in Gaza since 2006.
The strike comes amid reports of progress in cease-fire negotiations between Palestinian group Hamas and Israel.
Negotiations were stalled for months, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused of imposing new conditions and breaking prior agreements.
Israel currently holds more than 11,000 Palestinian prisoners, while it is estimated that 98 Israelis are detained in Gaza. Hamas said that many Israeli captives have been killed in indiscriminate Israeli airstrikes.
Israel has continued a genocidal war on Gaza, which has killed more than 46,700 people, most of them women and children, since a Hamas attack on Oct. 7, 2023, despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire.
In November 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
