ISTANBUL (AA) – The Kremlin said on Wednesday that Russia will take measures in response to the opening of a US missile base in Poland.

“Of course, this (step) leads to the adoption of appropriate measures to ensure parity,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in the capital Moscow.

On Tuesday, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski declared in a video posted by his ministry on X that a US missile defense base will open in the town of Redzikowo near the Baltic coast in northern Poland on Nov. 13.

According to Sikorski, the project to open such a base began during George W. Bush's presidency, and its completion is proof of the "geostrategic consistency of the United States."

However, Peskov said President Vladimir Putin had opposed the plan as early as the 2000s.

The goal of opening such a base is to “militarily contain” Russia’s potential, the spokesman claimed.
