ANKARA (AA) - Visiting Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Sunday met Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to discuss a string of issues, mainly including Kuala Lumpur's bid to join the BRICS group of emerging economies.
Anwar received Lavrov at the Seri Perdana, the prime minister's office, in Putrajaya. Lavrov is on a two-day visit to Malaysia.
“This potential membership holds substantial promise for both nations and underscores our commitment to fostering robust international collaboration,” the Malaysian premier wrote on Facebook.
“We also explored avenues to enhance bilateral cooperation, with a particular focus on strengthening ties in key areas such as investment and trade, science and technology, agriculture, defense and military, education, and tourism and culture."
In June, Anwar confirmed Malaysia’s intention to join BRICS to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
BRICS includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. In January, it welcomed Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE as full members.
The two also discussed the ongoing situation in Palestine. “Both Malaysia and Russia underscored the imperative need for a permanent cease-fire, immediate humanitarian relief, and the recognition of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations," Anwar said.
Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, which continues since February 2022, Malaysia reiterated its stance on dialogue and diplomatic efforts as path to a sustainable resolution.
