ANKARA (AA) - Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski on Saturday equalized the German football legend Gerd Muller's 40-goal single-season record that he has been holding for 49 years.
"HE'S DONE IT! ROBERT #LEWANG40LSKI. @Lewy_Official [Lewandowski] has matched Gerd Muller's legendary #Bundesliga record of 40 goals in a single season," the German Bundesliga said on Twitter to hail Lewandowski.
This season's German champions Bayern Munich, drew with Freiburg 2-2 on Saturday as 32-year-old Lewandowski scored from a penalty kick in the first half.
The Polish star can now break Muller's record that the 75-year-old set in the 1971-72 season.
Bayern Munich will take on Augsburg in the next fixture on Saturday, May 22, at home as the 2020-21 season in the Bundesliga will end after the 34th-week matches.
The 1974 FIFA World Cup winner with Germany, Muller was one of the famous Bayern Munich forwards, who played for the Bavarians in 1964-1979.
