Magnitude-6.8 earthquake strikes Morocco

Epicenter 46.6 miles southeast of Marrakech, according to United States Geological Survey

A powerful magnitude-6.8 earthquake rattled central Morocco late Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The epicenter was 75 kilometers (46.6 miles) southeast of Marrakech. It struck just after 11 p.m. local time at a depth of 18.5 kilometers, said USGS.

The quake was felt in several cities, including the capital Rabat, as well as Casablanca, Meknes and Fes, said media reports.

The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) assessed the quake at magnitude-7.

Videos on social media captured the immediate aftermath that showed residents spilling out onto streets.

There are no immediate reports of damage, injuries or casualties.
