The Maldives presidential election is headed for a run-off as none of the candidates received the required 50% vote for an outright win, state media reported on Sunday.
According to preliminary results, Mohamed Muizzu, mayor of the capital Male and main opposition candidate, is in the lead with 46.15% of the vote, while the incumbent, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, received 39.09%.
Eight candidates were vying for the top post in Saturday’s vote. While Solih is considered pro-India, his main rival Muiz, is seen as pro-China.
The second round is expected on Sept. 30.
