DOUALA, Cameroon (AA) - The Mali junta has decided to lift the suspension of political activities in the country, according to a decree.
"The government has decided to lift the suspension of political parties and the political activities of associations," said a statement broadcast live on national television station ORTM.
The military authorities of the West African country, in power since the May 2021 coup, suspended political activities on April 10.
They had justified the measure by the need to safeguard public order, in view of the multiple challenges facing the country in climatic, security, and social terms, in preparation for the organization of the national inter-Malian dialogue for peace and national reconciliation.
"Through this dissuasive measure, the government was able to contain all the threats of public order disturbances that were looming over this major event in the life of the nation," the authorities said.
The said dialogue, held from April 13 to May 10, "took place under the best possible conditions," according to the government.
The decision to lift the suspension is in line with "the implementation of the dialogue's recommendations in a climate of control of the security, political and social situation," it said.
