ANKARA (AA) - In his first season at Manchester City, Erling Haaland has been displaying astonishing performance as the Norwegian superstar carries on scoring goals to set new records in the ongoing both local league and European campaigns.
On Wednesday, Haaland was again on the scoresheet to have a historic night.
The 22-year-old, who previously played for Germany's Borussia Dortmund in 2020-2022, scored a goal for Manchester City in their 3-0 win against West Ham United to set the record for the most goals in a single English Premier League season with 35.
Haaland beat Premier League veterans Andy Cole and Alan Shearer, who scored 34 goals each for their clubs.
Cole and Shearer have already retired from the game.
This season, Haaland tallied 51 goals in all competitions, including the English Premier League and UEFA Champions League, the club's main objectives.
With 51 goals, Haaland surpassed former football players Vic Watson (West Ham in 1929-30 season) and Tom Waring (Aston Villa in 1930-31 season).
Watson and Waring previously scored 50 goals each for a top-tier English club in a single season.
In the remainder of the 2022-23 season, the Norwegian forward needs to tally 13 more goals to beat Dixie Dean, who had 63 goals for Everton in the 1927-28 season.
Premier League leaders Man City have five more games to conclude this season as he has time to extend his records.
In the Champions League semifinals, the Manchester club will face Real Madrid twice on May 9 and May 17.
- Haaland scores more league goals than Chelsea
This season Haaland has scored more Premier League goals than Chelsea, who spent at least $600 million for signings since the London club was bought by American investor Todd Boehly's group.
A consortium led by US businessman Todd Boehly completed its Chelsea takeover in May 2022.
Chelsea's previous owner and chair, Roman Abramovich, a Russian billionaire, was disqualified as club director by the Premier League amid a slew of sanctions against Russia because of Moscow's war on Ukraine.
Mid-table Chelsea scored 31 goals in the 2022-23 Premier League season.
As an individual, Haaland beat many other clubs in goalscoring, such as Nottingham Forest (30 goals), Wolverhampton Wanderers (29), Southampton (28) and Everton (27).
All these clubs are competing in the 2022-23 Premier League.
- Scores majority of his goals at home
Haaland scored sensational 51 goals for Man City in all competitions, such as the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and local cup competitions.
He racked up 35 league goals, 12 Champions League goals, three FA Cup goals, and one Carabao Cup goal.
The star player bagged 35 goals out of 51 in Manchester City's home venue, Etihad Stadium.
Separately this season, Haaland made five hat-tricks for the English club, which means scoring three goals in a single game.
In a Champions League match against Germany's RB Leipzig on March 14, Haaland scored five goals, which was a historic night for him at Etihad.
Haaland set many individual records after his quintet in the 7-0 win over RB Leipzig.
The huge victory made the English club reach the Champions League quarterfinals.
In the same match, Haaland beat Tommy Johnson's Manchester City record of 38 goals in the 1928-29 season.
Johnson's club record of 38 goals in a single season had stood for 94 years.
- Youngest, fastest player to have 30 Champions League goals
In the home win over RB Leipzig, Haaland became the fastest and youngest player to have scored 30 Champions League goals.
On March 14, Haaland was 22 years and 236 days old to be the record holder in this field as he beat Paris Saint-Germain's French forward Kylian Mbappe.
Mbappe was 22 years and 352 days old when he tallied 30 Champions League goals.
Haaland also became the fastest player to have scored 30 Champions League goals in terms of the number of games.
The Norwegian international has done it in 25 games to set a record, beating Ruud van Nistelrooy.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward has scored 30 Champions League goals in 34 matches.
Additionally, Haaland became the third player to tally five goals in a single Champions League match after Brazilian forward Luiz Adriano (2014 with Shakhtar Donetsk) and Argentine superstar Lionel Messi (2012 with Barcelona).
