ANKARA (AA) – Manchester United player Mason Greenwood was released on bail on Wednesday following his arrest on suspicion of raping, assaulting and threatening to kill a woman.
The 20-year-old remains under investigation, the Greater Manchester Police said in a statement.
Greenwood was initially arrested on suspicion of rape and assault on Sunday after police “became aware of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence.”
He was further arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of sexual assault and making threats to kill.
Manchester United have suspended the forward until further notice, while sponsor Nike has distanced itself from Greenwood, saying it is “deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation.”
Video game developer EA Sports also took action by removing Greenwood from FIFA products.
Greenwood joined Manchester United’s academy at the age of six and rose through the ranks to make his debut for the first team in March 2019.
He has also played once for England’s national team.
