BERLIN (AA) - German authorities are investigating a massive security breach during Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s visit to Frankfurt, authorities said on Friday.
A man with his private car joined Scholz's convoy, got off from the car after the convoy arrived at the apron of Frankfurt airport, and greeted and hugged the chancellor, local media reported.
The incident occurred on Wednesday night. Scholz was surprised but did not feel threatened in any way, deputy government spokesman Wolfgang Buchner told a news conference in Berlin.
Interior Ministry spokesman Sascha Lawrenz said such an incident was “very serious” and “unacceptable,” and authorities are investigating how this happened.
“The aim of this is of course to ensure that such an incident would not occur again,” he said.
The man was arrested without resistance by the police at Frankfurt airport.
He reportedly said during his interrogation that he followed the cars as he thought that it was a "wedding convoy”, according to Focus magazine.
