NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania (AA) – Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani launched preparations on Thursday for an inclusive political dialogue in the North African country.
In a speech marking the 64th anniversary of Mauritania’s independence from France, Ghazouani said the government will initiate consultations with various political parties in the coming months.
“The dialogue will be inclusive, frank, and responsible, avoiding unproductive disputes and narrow personal or party interests at the expense of the public good,” the president said.
Ghazouani emphasized the importance of learning from previous experiences and introducing new mechanisms and methodologies to ensure the dialogue’s success, though he did not elaborate on these details.
“Strengthening democracy requires the separation of powers, development of constitutional institutions, judicial reform, and improvements to legal infrastructure,” he said.
The Mauritanian leader stressed the need to continue building a state governed by law and institutions.
Mauritania held presidential elections in July, resulting in Ghazouani's re-election for a second five-year term. However, the opposition questioned electoral integrity, leading to protests by supporters of his contender Biram Dah Abeid. The unrest resulted in three fatalities.
Although calm was restored after the polls, the opposition has continued to call for political dialogue to address issues in the electoral system and ensure transparency in future elections.
