Mixed opening for US stock market

Google parent company Alphabet's shares decline 3 percent after weak earnings

NEW YORK (AA) - The U.S. stock market opened mixed on Tuesday. The Dow added 146 points to begin the day at 21,659 points, and the S&P 500 rose eight points to 2,478 points.

However, the Nasdaq decreased four points to start trading at 6,406 points. The index closed Monday at a new record high level of 6,410 points.

At the first bell on Tuesday, retail firms Macy's and Target saw their stock price increase by 1.6 percent and 1.1 percent, respectively.

Google's parent company Alphabet, however, saw its shares decline by 3.1 percent after weak quarterly earnings.

Alphabet announced late on Monday that its net income had decreased 28 percent to $3.52 billion in the second quarter of this year, from $4.88 billion the same period last year.
