WASHINGTON (AA) - Most Democrats want US President Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential race following his first debate in late June, according to a poll released Thursday.

The Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll found 56% of Democrats indicated that Biden should "step aside and let someone else run" in November; 42% said Biden should continue to seek reelection.

Overall, 67% of American adults said the president should drop out of the race.

Meanwhile, the list of congressional Democrats calling for Biden to drop his reelection bid has grown to nearly a dozen, according to media outlets.

The calls for Biden's withdrawal come in the wake of his dismal showing at the first debate against former President Donald Trump on June 27.

On Wednesday, Peter Welch became the first Democratic senator to ure Biden to withdraw.

“We cannot unsee President Biden’s disastrous debate performance. We cannot ignore or dismiss the valid questions raised since that night,” Welch wrote in a Washington Post op-ed.
