MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AA) - Five people have been killed and 11 injured in multiple bomb explosions in the northeastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri, officials said.

Three suicide bombers blew themselves up at different locations of Maiduguri early Wednesday morning, killing a vigilante and a civilian, the spokesman of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in the northeast, Abdulkadir Ibrahim confirmed in a statement to Anadolu Agency.

Police spokesman Victor Isuku said one of the bombers attempted to force his way into a camp for displaced Boko Haram victims in the Usmanti area on the outskirts of the city.

"He was prevented by the residents, and in the process detonated an IED strapped to his body killing himself and one civilian," he disclosed.

He added that the injured were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The police spokesman blamed Boko Haram. The group has carried out similar violent acts for nearly seven years in the region.

The explosions came barely two days after twin blasts killed seven in the city.
