ANKARA (AA) - Andy Murray knocked Matteo Berrettini out of the 2023 Australian Open first round when he won a five-set battle against the world no. 14.
The British veteran stunned the Italian tennis player with a 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-7(7), 7-6 (10-6) victory in an almost five-hour men's single game at Melbourne Park.
"Tonight I need to give myself some credit because the last few years have been tough," Murray said. "I stayed strong and I deserved to win. I was impressed with myself, which again is not something ... I'm hard on myself usually."
The three-time Grand Slam champion reached Round 2 and seems on his way to achieving his maiden Australian Open title after reaching the final stage for five times before.
The 2021 Wimbledon finalist Berrettini reached the semifinals in the Australian Open last year.
