Nasdaq, S&P 500 close at new record highs

Dow ends 4-day losing streak; oil prices up more than 2.2%

ISTANBUL (AA) - The Nasdaq and the S&P 500 closed at new record highs on Monday as US stocks kicked off the new week with gains.

The S&P 500 increased 41 points, or 0.77%, to finish the session at 5,473 and the Nasdaq added 168 points, or 0.95%, to end the day at 17,857.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, meanwhile, rose almost 189 points, or 0.49%, to close at 38,778 as the bluc-chip index ended its four trading days of losing streak.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, rose 0.71% to 12.75. The 10-year US Treasury yield added 1.77% to 4.286%.

The dollar index shed 0.21% to 105.33, while the euro increased 0.33% to $1.0736 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in the red, with gold losing 0.6% to $2,319 per ounce and silver trimming 0.3% to $29.46.

Oil prices were up more than 2.2%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $84.46 and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $79.89.
