KATHMANDU, Nepal (AA) - Nepal on Thursday reported 1,111 new COVID-19 infections, highest single-day count in the Himalayan country, said the Health Ministry spokesman.
Eight more fatalities over the past 24 hours have raised the death toll to 183, said the spokesman Jageshwor Gautam at a news briefing.
According to the US-based Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Center, Nepal has so far recorded 35,529 cases.
Gautam said so far 20,073 people who had reported infections have recovered since the pandemic outbreak was reported on Jan. 24.
Around 4,000 people have reported infections in the capital Kathmandu, where cases have spiked after authorities lifted the nationwide lockdown on July 21.
On Aug. 17, authorities issued prohibitory orders restricting transport, shutting down offices and markets in worst-hit towns and districts across the country.
On Wednesday, officials extended the restrictions in Kathmandu until Sept. 2.
Health experts have warned that infections may peak in Nepal over the coming weeks.
