KANO, Nigeria (AA) - Police on Tuesday fired teargas to disperse a protest rally organized against the high cost of living in the country.

The protesters were marching towards the Eagles Square when the police fired teargas to disperse them.

Damilare Adenola, an organizer of the rally, said the protesters will regroup and continue their demonstration.

The protests, organized by some civil society organizations in Lagos and Abuja, aims to address issues related to the increase in fuel prices, rising food costs, and the impact of inflation on the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

The demonstrations coinciding with Nigeria's 64th independence anniversary were a follow-up to the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protest in August, which turned violent in certain northern states.

The protesters want the government to address the economic difficulties and hunger in the nation, according to the organizers.

In a national speech, President Bola Tinubu had promised to reduce the cost of living.

Many people remained indoors in most of the Nigerian cities while many business places, including some markets and shops, remained closed.

Most of the streets in Benin City, Edo State capital, Lagos, Kaduna, and Oyo states were deserted on Tuesday as a result of the planned protests.
