Nigeria's national intelligence agency chief resigns

Ahmed Rufai Abubakar steps down, citing 'personal family issues'

LAGOS, Nigeria (AA) - The chief of Nigeria's National Intelligence Agency (NIA) resigned from office on Saturday.

Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, director general of the NIA, handed over his resignation letter to President Bola Tinubu, citing personal reason for quitting his job.

"There are quite a number of reasons; some personal family issues, but nothing very serious. The friendship (with the president) will continue," he told journalists shortly after tendering his resignation to the president at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the nation's capital.

Abubakar was appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2018 and retained as director general of the agency by Tinubu since June 2023.
