No planned visit 'at the moment' by UN's Cyprus envoy to Island: Spokesman

Maria Angela Holguin will 'meet with Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders separately outside of Cyprus in coming weeks,' says deputy spokesman

WASHINGTON (AA) - Maria Angela Holguin, personal envoy of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Cyprus, will not visit the Island soon, a UN spokesman said on Friday.

"We wish to clarify that no visit to Cyprus is planned at the moment. She will, however, meet with the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders separately outside of Cyprus in the coming weeks," deputy spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters.

Haq did not give further information about the envoy's upcoming meeting with Nikos Christodoulides and Ersin Tatar.

This January, Guterres announced the appointment of Holguin as his personal envoy on Cyprus.

Holguin served as minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia between 2010-2018.

Cyprus has been mired in a decades-long dispute between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots, despite a series of diplomatic efforts by the UN to achieve a comprehensive settlement.
