Nose filling cannot substitute rhinoplasty, says doctor

Dr. Erkan Soylu does not recommend nasal filling for patients considering nose surgery

ISTANBUL (AA) - Nose filling is not a substitute for rhinoplasty, according to a Turkish physician who does not recommend the procedure to patients who are considering nose surgery.

"I do not recommend nasal filling to patients who are considering nose surgery in the future or who have a large nose,” said Dr. Erkan Soylu, an ear, nose and throat specialist at Istanbul's Medipol Mega University hospital.

Nose filling involves the injection of substances into the root and tip of the nose to make the arch on the back of the nose flat, said Soylu.

He said hyaluronic acid is generally used as a filling material but it dissolves spontaneously in about six to 12 months.

Soylu said doctors have seen patients whose fillings have remained for two years.

He does not recommend the procedure to those patients because the filling enlarges the nose.

If patients have filling, doctors empty the material during the operation, he said.

“Nasal filling may be recommended for patients with a small nose who do not plan to have surgery in the future or who have a medical obstacle to surgery. For example, those who cannot receive anesthesia due to any health problem, those with bleeding and coagulation disorders, or those who are very afraid of surgery,” he said.

He advised patients to have their filings in appropriate places and by physicians who are authorized to perform medical aesthetics.
