ROME (AA) - More than 1,000 irregular migrants have reached on southern coast of Italy over the past weekend, according to local media.
The migrants arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa as well as the Calabria and Puglia regions, the ANSA news agency reported on Sunday.
On Sunday alone, 232 migrants reached Lampedusa, bringing the total number of migrants housed in the island's immigration centers to 750.
The International Organization for Migration has estimated that 1,121 people have died or gone missing in the central Mediterranean Sea since the beginning of this year.
According to Italy’s Interior Ministry, 46,991 irregular migrants have arrived in the country so far this year.
Between October of last year and Sept. 23, nearly 133,000 irregular migrants have reached Italy.
