VIENNA (AA) — Last year saw at least 1,302 incidents of racism taking place in Austria, according to a report released Thursday.
According to the 2023 report by Civil Courage and Anti-racism-work (ZARA), most of the attacks occurred on digital platforms.
While 58% were carried out online, 42% were perpetrated in social settings.
However, the actual number of racist incidents is likely much higher, according to ZARA head Rita Isiba, who said most instances of racism go unreported.
Underlining that racism is a social problem, rather than an individual one, Isiba said political action was needed.
Politicians need to introduce a national action plan against racism and implement it as soon as possible, she urged.
