KARACHI, Pakistan (AA) - Pakistan on Thursday said it has reported the first case of the new omicron variant of coronavirus.
The patient is a woman with a history of foreign travel, who came to a private hospital with coronavirus symptoms in the port city of Karachi.
According to the Health Ministry of Sindh province, of which Karachi is the capital, the condition of the patient, who was unvaccinated, is stable.
Authorities are further investigating the patient's travel history.
South African scientists announced on Nov. 24 the discovery of the variant, which has several mutations.
On Wednesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) said the new omicron variant, which it had declared a "variant of concern," has been detected in 57 countries so far.
