RAMALLAH, Palestine (AA) – A Palestinian was killed by security forces in the West Bank city of Tulkarem on Wednesday, according to witnesses.
In a statement, Palestinian police spokesman Louay Irziqat said one person was killed by gunfire inside the Tulkarem refugee camp.
He, however, did not specify the party behind his death, saying an investigation has been launched into the incident.
Eyewitnesses said the fatality occurred in clashes between Palestinian security forces and gunmen when the former attempted to remove iron barriers at the camp’s entrances.
Talal Dweikat, a spokesman for the Palestinian security agency, confirmed that police forces intervened in the camp after reports of gunfire.
“Gunmen opened fire after security forces removed dangerous materials and barriers from inside the camp, which prompted the security forces to intervene,” he said in statements cited by state news agency Wafa.
Palestinian gunmen usually set up iron barriers at the entrances of Palestinian camps to hinder Israeli raids into their areas.
