RAMALLAH, Palestine (AA) – Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas cut short his visit to Jordan and decided to return to Ramallah Tuesday night, on the eve of a planned summit with US President Joe Biden.

“President Abbas decided to return home tonight and called an emergency meeting of the leadership,” said Hussein Al-Sheikh, secretary of the Palestine Liberation Organization.

The official Wafa news agency said the decision was taken after an Israeli airstrike on the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza, which officials say killed hundreds of people.

The airstrike came on day 11 of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which flared up after a surprise Oct. 7 attack by the Palestinian group.

The leaders of US, Palestine, Jordan and Egypt are scheduled to take part in the summit in Amman on Wednesday.
