The Philippines have launched an investigation into a collision in the South China Sea that left three fishermen dead, the country’s president said on Wednesday.
On Monday, three fishermen died after their boat reportedly collided with an oil tanker in the South China Sea.
"We are deeply saddened by the deaths of the three fishermen, including the captain of the fishing vessel," President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said on X.
He added the incident is still under investigation to ascertain the details and circumstances surrounding the collision.
According to the Manila Times, the Philippine Coast Guard said that after cross-referencing the fishermen's account, the date, and the time, a thorough check on marine traffic was immediately conducted.
“It turns out that Pacific Anna, a crude oil tanker vessel registered under the flag of Marshall Islands, aligns with the details provided by the fishermen,” it added.
The Philippine Coast Guard said that it would reach out to the Marshall Islands authorities and the next port to be visited by the said crude oil tanker ship as part of the investigation.
"We assure the victims, their families, and everyone that we will exert every effort to hold accountable those who are responsible for this unfortunate maritime incident," the president added.
He also called for refraining from speculation.
