ATHENS (AA) – Poland on Wednesday called for tougher sanctions against Russia, stressing the provision of long-range missiles to Kyiv to defend the country.

"We should respond to the latest onslaught on Ukraine in a language that (Russian President) Putin understands: by tightening sanctions so that he cannot make new weapons with smuggled components and by giving Kyiv long range missiles that will enable it to take out launch sites and command centres," Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said on X.

On Dec. 29, at least 40 people were killed in Russia's massive air attacks on Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, Lviv, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia regions.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the strikes as Moscow's "heaviest attack" to date.
