ISTANBUL (AA) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has been invited to attend Mexican President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum’s inauguration on Oct. 1, local media reported.
“Russia's invitation to take part in the inauguration of President Sheinbaum was sent to President Putin,” the Mexican Embassy in Moscow confirmed to daily newspaper Izvestia late Tuesday.
Mexico's diplomatic mission said Putin will decide whether he will participate in the ceremony himself or appoint another high-ranking official to do so on his behalf.
The Russian mission in Mexico also confirmed receiving the invite.
Sheinbaum, a climate scientist and the former mayor of Mexico City, won a landslide victory in the June presidential election, becoming Mexico’s first female president.
Putin had congratulated Sheinbaum on her victory, terming Mexico as Moscow's “traditionally friendly partner” in Latin America.
