MOSCOW (AA) - A Russian-US citizen was arrested on Tuesday in the city of Yekaterinburg on charges of high treason, the Russian security agency said.

"The Federal Security Service (FSB) in Yekaterinburg suppressed the illegal activities of a 33-year-old resident of Los Angeles, who has dual citizenship of Russia and the US. She was involved in providing financial assistance to a foreign state in activities directed against the security of our country," the agency said in a statement.

According to the FSB, since February 2022, the accused had been "proactively collecting money in the interests of one of the Ukrainian organizations, which were subsequently used to purchase medicines, equipment, weapons and ammunition for the armed forces of Ukraine."

In the US, she had been taking part in rallies in support of Ukraine, it said.

Based on the available facts, the FSB opened a criminal case on high treason, and the court has chosen a preventive measure in the form of detention for the accused, it added. The woman's name has not been released by the FSB.

Russia launched its "special military operation" in Ukraine in February 2022.
