ANKARA (AA) - Veteran striker Andriy Shevchenko has been appointed as the head coach of Italian football club Genoa, it was announced on Sunday.
The Serie A club said they reached an agreement with Shevchenko until June 30, 2024.
It comes as former Genoa manager Davide Ballardini parted ways after a 2-2 draw against Empoli on Friday.
Shevchenko, 45, was appointed as Ukraine's head coach in 2016. But after a 4-0 defeat against England in EURO 2020 quarterfinals, he stepped down.
The Ballon D'or winner of 2004, who has one UEFA Champions League title in 2003 and one Serie A title in 2004 with AC Milan, also played for Chelsea and Dinamo Kiev.
Being the most scoring player and the second-most capped player in the history of Ukraine, Shevchenko is considered a legend.
