BELGRADE, Serbia (AA) - Slovenian farmers on Wednesday protested a government project to expand riverbeds against floods, claiming that it will damage agricultural lands.

More than 100 farmers came to the capital Ljubljana from different parts of the country to gather in front of the Slovenian Water Agency.

Farmers demanded that the government's effort to expand the riverbeds should be suspended and modern methods should be used to solve the flooding issues.

They also demand that government officials give them an appointment within two weeks to discuss the issue.

Slovenia was hit by floods as a result of heavy rains in August 2023.

A "state of emergency" was declared in the north of Ljubljana and six people died in floods across the country.

The Slovenian government announced that two-thirds of the country's territory was flooded, causing over $500 million in damage.
