ISTANBUL (AA) - Soldiers were killed in a vehicle carrying Russian Peacekeeping Forces in Karabakh as a result of gunfire, the Azerbaijan Defense Ministry said late Wednesday.
“On September 20, as a result of the shelling of a UAZ Patriot vehicle of the peacekeeping contingent of the Russian Federation near the settlement of Janyatag, the tragic death of peacekeeping contingent personnel was recorded,” it said in a statement.
The statement added that Azerbaijani and Russian investigative authorities are collaborating on-site to thoroughly examine the factors behind the killings.
Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry conveyed condolences to the Russian Defense Ministry, the Command of the Russian Peacekeeping Forces and families and loved ones of the deceased soldiers.
No further detail was provided regarding the number of soldiers killed or who was responsible.
