Soldiers killed in Burkina Faso border incident

Local sources say 40 heavily armed attackers stormed military post in Nassoumbou, northern Burkina Faso

OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso (AA) – At least 11 Burkinabe soldiers have been killed in an attack on a military post in northern Burkina Faso by about 40 unidentified armed men, local sources told Anadolu Agency on Friday.

A local journalist, speaking on condition of anonymity for security reasons, told Anadolu Agency: "The locality where the attack was carried out is about 30 kilometers [19 miles] from the Malian border; the assailants came from this neighboring territory.”

The Burkinabe armed forces confirmed that a number of deaths had taken place in Nassoumbou early on Friday morning but did not give an exact figure.

Since the beginning of 2016 several attacks have taken place in northern Burkina Faso at the Malian frontier.

Two of those attacks were claimed by Daesh in statements, but there has been no claim of responsibility for this morning’s incident.
