ISTANBUL (AA) - South Africa beat Cabo Verde 2-1 on penalties Saturday to advance to the Africa Cup of National semifinal.
Neither team was able to produce a goal in normal and extra time so the quarterfinal clash went to penalties at Stade Charles Konan Banny de Yamoussoukro
Teboho Mokoena and Mothobi Mvala converted their kicks for South Africa while Bryan Silva Teixeira scored the only kick in the shootout for Cabo Verde.
The Bafana Bafana qualified for their first AFCON semifinal since 2000.
In another quarterfinal Saturday, Ivory Coast pulled off an extra-time comeback win against Mali with a 2-1 score.
Nene Dorgeles scored for Mali in the 71st minute while Simon Adingra produced a goal in the 90th minute for Ivory Coast at Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara.
Oumar Diakit netted in the 120th minute to advance the Ivory Coast which will face the Congo in the semifinals.
