ABUJA, Nigeria (AA) - South Africa on Thursday recorded 1,906 new cases of the novel coronavirus in a 24-hour period, bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 665,188, according to Health Ministry data.
The ministry said at least 88 more people died of COVID-19, putting the total number of fatalities at 16,206.
Recoveries exceed 594,000, and over 4.08 million COVID-19 tests have been performed since the first case was reported in the country in March.
South Africa is maintaining its position as the country where COVID-19 is seen the most in the Africa continent.
Across the world, COVID-19 has claimed over 975,100 lives in 188 countries and regions since first being detected in Wuhan, China in December.
The US, India, Brazil and Russia are currently the worst-hit countries.
Some 31.78 million cases have been reported worldwide, with recoveries topping 21.88 million, according to figures compiled by US-based Johns Hopkins University.
