North Korea fired a short-range ballistic missile towards the Sea of Japan on Sunday, according to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff.

“Our military detected a short-range ballistic missile launched from the Pyongyang area towards the East Sea at around 22:38 on Sunday,” it said, using another name for the body of water.

The missile flew around 570 kilometers (354 miles) before landing in the sea, it added.

South Korean Deputy National Security Advisor Kim Tae-hyo said on Dec. 15 that North Korea might test an intercontinental ballistic missile this month.
